Small homes allow greater flexibility for residents and facilitate a focus on the individual rather than the problems of group living. Some children respond very positively to a group size of a maximum three, especially where the staff team is kept as small as is practical to encourage consistency and positive relationships.
Where appropriate, children are placed and supported in mainstream education or other Local Authority provision.
In our small units, where there is no alternative, education can be provided. Ideally, this is short-term and directed towards a return to mainstream. This educational support can be individual or group based and is co-ordinated by our registered residential special school in line with the joint DfES/DOH Guidance, "The Education of Young People in Care".
